Ilha Grande, Rio De Janiero, Brazil was formerly a jail: the prison of "Dois Rios" was set up at the beginning of the 20th century and was intended only for grand Brazilian criminals! Nobody was allowed to go to the island unless but the prisoners and the prison's staff! The history says that nobody escape but one....The prison end its activity in 1994 and the Island was then opened to the public! It's less than 10 years since the Island is open to tourism and the "no-car" policy makes it a very peaceful place!
